Located in Antalya’s Manavgat district, the Ancient City of Side was one of the most significant harbor cities of ancient Pamphylia. Founded in the 7th century BC, Side takes its name from the Luwian word meaning “pomegranate.” The city was established on a 350–400 meter wide peninsula and came under the rule of many civilizations, including the Lydians, Persians, Macedonians, Ptolemies, Seleucids, Pergamon Kingdom and the Roman Empire.
Side opened its gates to Alexander the Great without resistance and flourished during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC, Side became a major center of commerce, culture, and education, even minting its own coins.
